Replica Project
We were given a brief to select an item and enlarge it exactly. I chose a love heart, a powdery circle shaped candy. I decided to make the models from mdf. I thought about styrofoam as it would be light and practical, but i wanted to experiement and practise with wood and different tools. To enlarge the love hearts exactly the same, I measured the diameter of the cirle, the depth and the lettering on the sweets and began englarging at different sizes. I also used a projecter to reflect the love heart larger on to a wall which i traced and measured. I came to the desicion to enlarge the ojbect by 18x, which caculated to two sheets of 2" thick mdf glued together to create the exact depth measurement. I decided to create two replica models, i started by drawing out the correct measurments of four circles, four hearts and lettering on to the wood and cut out each piece using a jigsaw and a drill to create an access point for the saw.Once all the pieces were cut i sanded them all by hand and with a belt sander to create a smooth rounded finish. I then glued all the parts together to create two giant love hearts ready for finsihing. After all the sections were glued together i decided i wanted to create more as an impact so i decided to create six more.
To finish my mfd love hearts i needed to create a powdery and dusty finsih in pastel colours. I knew that polyfiler would create the correct look so i started experimenting with different pigments such as inks, paint and food colouring. Food colouring determeined to be the best as the paint and ink dried with dark blotchy spots. The processs was long and determined patience and repetition to create the same look for each model.
